Ars Nova Workshop Presents: Jonathan Finlayson & Sicilian Defense

$15 General Admission

The Philadelphia Art Alliance and Ars Nova Workshop are proud to present Jonathan Finlayson & Sicilian Defense.

In recent years, trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson has been featured on three albums that were named #1 album of the year by The New York Times: alto saxophonist Steve Lehman's Travail, Transformation and Flow (Pi 2009), Steve Coleman and Five Elements' Harvesting Semblances and Affinities (Pi 2010) and David Virelles's Continuum (Pi 2012). A student of Steve Coleman, Finlayson “breathes fire, but displays finely honed command and control techniques while making every note count” (All About Jazz). Guitarist Mary Halvorson describes his sound as “razor clear and yet simultaneously vulnerable.”

Sicilian Defense is named for a chess opening move, and its abundant nooks and odd-metered beats mirror the complicated logic of a good match. Finlayson gets support from some of the best young jazz musicians on the scene: pianist David Virelles (Chris Potter, Ravi Coltrane, Mark Turner); guitarist Miles Okazakis (whose own album Generations was named to the NY Times' best of 2012 list); bassist Keith Witty (bandleader of Thieves); and drummer Damon Reid (Rudresh Mahanthappa, Steve Lehman, Robert Glasper).

The ensemble's Moment and the Message was released by Pi Recordings in May 2013.
